Stepping-stones to Success in Business

Decide what you want to do. Check and make sure that your goal is sensible, realistic, practical and related to the resources. It must fit in within your abilities and there must be a fair chance of your making it. This does not mean you should not have high ambitions. In fact you must have laudable, worth-while goals. But work out the step. Decide on the intermediary goals. Proceed surely and steadily step by step. Attempting the impossible may make you give it up. It may make you feel beaten and heart-broken. The best way never to feel beaten is to know your strength and make the best use of it. Although we may lack much, most of us have a great deal. Success without health is a poor thing. Money without love is mockery. If you can not afford everything you want, think what a thrill you get when you can afford some-thing. You will find that you are making definite progress towards the goal. Motivation to set our energies going in the right direction comes invariably from having before us a clear, definite picture of our ultimate objectives. Self discipline enables to channel energy into a constructive direction that might otherwise so wasted by dissipation. The secret of concentration is interest and will power, especially in the beginning. It is helped by forming a clear picture in one’s mind of the ultimate objective.

To be active, to be industrious, to produce quick reaction you need energy. In fact, control of energy in the starting point of all useful achievement. Whatever the activity, whether it is manual labor, industrial output, painting a picture, playing foot-ball or doing house-work, energy is required. In order to achieve, one’s energy will have to be channeled into the right directions. Great energy may be merely destructive if it is not properly harnessed. Without self-discipline we are prone to waste our energies in despair, anger, arguments, vacillation etc. which are unproductive and harmful. Self discipline enables us to utilize our energy in a positive and constructive manner.
Motivation to keep our energies directed in the right course comes mainly by holding before us a clear, unwavering picture of our ultimate goal. By relating all we do to this goal we gain a sense of purpose.
Belief in ultimate success, faith in one’ ability and will-power to stick at it, will enable the individual to draw upon the vast reserves of energy. A time schedule is also an essential requirement. You must have deadline for the things you wish to do. It will ensure that everything is done as and when it ought to be done.

We all make mistakes. To err is human. All great men have made mistakes and have also benefited from them. When you make a mistake, don’t keep fretting about it. Do not look back at it long. Analyze and take the reason of the thing into your own mind, institute remedial measures and then look forward. Mistakes must be regarded as lessons of wisdom. One should, therefore, never be afraid of mistakes. We must take reasonable precautions against making mistakes. But we must remember that mistakes do and can happen. If you are afraid of making mistakes, you may never begin at all. If you do not try, if you do not make any attempts, the question of making mistakes may not arise. But then the question of making progress and gaining your goal also does not arise. When mistakes do happen we can look at them as positive opportunities-as stepping-stones rather than stumbling blocks to success. Often mistakes teach us important lessons and tell us how we can avoid bigger and more costly mistakes. The rules to make the most of one’ mistakes are quite simple and they can be readily adopted. First of all, we must take the necessary precautions as a prudent and reasonable person takes, to avoid them. One must thus be careful to avoid mistakes whenever he possibly can. Next, one must learn from every mistake he makes. As we have seen men have become great not because they never made mistakes, but they had the wisdom to learn and benefit from their mistakes. Thirdly, one should not be weighed down because of the mistake committed. It should not inhibit his further actions. On the other hand, he should take coverage from the lesson he has learn t from the mistake and from the fact that he is now wiser and better fortified. The individual should not therefore be too much downcast by a mistake. On the other hand he must go ahead with greater confidence and preparedness. Lastly, we should be prepared for such mistakes and be ready to attend to them when they occur. The knowledge that others also make mistakes will give the individual the necessary confidence and courage. If you thus accept mistakes with undue worry, you will gain your objective surely and certainly.

When any particular work seems difficult or impossible to us, we must nevertheless make a try, start it and keep it going. We must realize all work appear like that in the beginning until we begin and develop the interest and enthusiasm. Once our interest has been aroused, then nothing is impossible or difficult any more. If we work patiently, resolutely and without doubt, the way will unfold. Every noble or great word at first seemed impossible to practically every one, except the one who badly made the attempt with determination and enthusiasm. Telephone, television, radio, cinema, electricity, aero plane, all might have seemed impossible at the start. If man had thought that walking on the moon is impossible, he would never have made it. If you wish to master the seemingly impossible or difficult task you must follow certain definite principles. First you make a start. Begin and keep working on it. Once you start, it will automatically gather momentum. Secondly, when you find the going difficult or when you get stuck, wait and relax. If you become relaxed and allow your unconscious mind to play its valuable part you will always find the answer. Thirdly, work at a steady pace. Proceed according to a definite plan. Do not run into arrears or rush things up. When you commence your task you must work unhurriedly with single minded concentration. Next have a generous, noble aim. Let your motive be right. As far as possible let your works benefit also others and the community. The other rule is to be bold and enterprising. Do not be afraid of making mistakes. Often the mistakes have proved to be the opportunities for great deeds of great men. Next, one should not be touched or affected by criticism. You should not be disheartened by other people’s discouraging remarks. Your faith in yourself should never falter. View the criticism objectively and dispassionately. Effective improvements and corrections if called for. Lastly, let not set-backs deter you from your goal. You must persist doggedly in the face of defeats. Failures are only the stepping stones for success.

Tremendous achievements are often accomplished by people whose only asset in the beginning appeared to be their sheer will-power. In the world of business, politics, profession, family and social life, they attain success by mere determination. It is not only possible but also easy for anyone to develop his will power. To begin with he must understand how the will works and how it can be developed first by the conscious mind and ultimately by the unconscious mind. Unwavering faith, strong self confidence and an optimistic outlook are the essential aids to strengthen one’s will-power. The will has been compared to the engine of a motor. It is there all the time strong, capable and powerful. However it needs, like the engine, some outside force to propel it, activate it and make it go.
Imagination has always been the pivot of our mental powers. The great men have always displayed will-power, concentration and determination in their efforts. Since imagination is part and parcel of the mental make-up of every human being, it can be developed to great advantage by every one of us. In words, by activating and enriching our imagination we can develop our personality and make it attractive as well as forceful. We can consider for a moment what wonders the power of imagination has worked for the human race. All the scientific discoveries are the fruits of imagination; whether the man flies around the world or rockets to the moon, all such amazing achievements have been accomplished by great fruitful and positive imagination. Imagination increases by exercises of application. It sustains the will-power. It also strengthens the will-power. It makes the individual hold on when the going gets tough. Imagination helps us to plan and provide for the future. The method of acquiring and strengthen the will-power by imagining success and then taking steps to achieve it can be beneficially employed by all of us, to attain our chosen goal.
The force of will-power will grow by constant practice. It can be successfully employed to get rid of smoking, stammering, and shyness and so on. You will automatically acquire the gift of getting things done by the sheer force of will-power. If you apply your will-power with resoluteness and determination and if you persist with your efforts in spite of initial set-backs, you will certainly succeed.

Planning Today for Your Career

• Critically assess your present work skills – In order to progress in your career, it will be necessary to assess your skills to uncover any deficiencies or weaknesses. As an aid, it might be helpful to read your job specifications which should be available from your boss. Alternatively, the required skills should be noted on your job advertisement, if you have retained the ad in your files. By the way, keeping your employment documents in a convenient file is always a good idea.
Check the skills which you should have mattered. If you have been in your job for a substantial period, you will probably be proficient in the skills which are used daily. However, it is common for job ads to specify skills which are less frequently used and therefore you may need to do some further training.

• Participate in training and updating Programs – Most firms and large organizations will either have in-service training programs or will sponsor employees to enroll in external courses. For those working in large firms, your personnel office will be able to give you details about in-house programs and relevant external courses available locally or by correspondence.

• Talk with senior people in your field – Some very helpful advice can be obtained from people who have forged careers in your field. Take time to meet with these people and ask how they started and progressed.

• Get to know the people up the ladder in your organization – If you are interested in progressing in your organization, it will be helpful to know the people who will be assessing your performance. This is not polishing the apple. On the contrary, it is knowing the apples-the good, the bad, and the indifferent. You can get to know these strategic people by participating on relevant committees at higher levels, and by becoming involved in your organization social activities, to name but a few possibilities.

• Schedule an appointment with your boss to discuss your career plans – The most critical person who can influence your career in your organization is your immediate boss. This person will be asked to write a report on your job strength and weaknesses when you apply for promotion. So, before you reach that stage, discuss your current position and how you can enhance your skills and abilities.
Getting more organized is a skill which will make you more effective and efficient at work and more satisfied at home.

• Use a daily plan to list the jobs to be done, indicating their priority and a time estimate for completing the job.
• Work to a daily plan each day.
• Get to your high priority jobs first.
• Reward yourself for completing each job.
• Take time periodically to do long-term planning.
• Use a yearly planner to schedule important projects and events.
• Allow for ample lead-up time to get large jobs done.
• Review your career plans regularly.
• Assess your job skills.
• Discuss your progress with friends, colleagues and your boss.

Improve Memory

A good memory is surely one of the essentials of successful living. A moment’s thought will convince you of the many advantages it brings-increased efficiency, speedier acquisition of qualifications, promotion, popularity, more confidence in conversation and public speaking. There is also the freedom from regrets, humiliations and embarrassments caused by a poor memory.
The fact is, the memory of every experience, everything we have heard or seen, is stored in the mind. A good memory is the ability to recall at will any of those stored impressions. The following attitudes and practices will help you do this.

Stop Saying Your Memory is Bad – Declaring that one has a bad memory is a popular excuse for forgetfulness. It is the worst thing you can do if you want to improve it. Every time you say or think your memory is poor, you are making it so, for it is a psychological law that whatever is repeatedly suggested to the mind tends to become a reality.
To improve your memory, use this law positively. Suggest to yourself repeatedly, especially at night and as you wake in the morning, that your memory is improving.
Daily, as you adopt this positive attitude, and as you implement the following suggestions, your memory will get more and more reliable. The days when you had a poor memory are over. In future, every day will see an improvement.

Begin Trusting Your Memory – The invalid will never be able to walk again if he remains in bed. He must get up and begin to walk. Similarly, if you want your memory to get stronger, you must begin trusting it. Next time you go shopping, don’t make a list, trust your memory.
To remember to do something, imagine yourself doing it at the time you wish to do it. For example, if you want to remember to take a book when you visit a friend tomorrow, see yourself now going out with the book under your arm. You will be surprised how quickly your memory become reliable. A few successful attempts at recall will be cumulative in their effect. You will trust your memory more confidently and with bigger tasks, and the more you do that, the better it will become.

Master Your Material – Make sure you completely understand the subject-matter you wish to memorize. Work at it until you have gasped every allusion and argument. If it is obscure, ask advice or consult a dictionary.
Another aid to understanding and recall is to make diagrams or sketches. A further useful practice is to explain the subject-matter to an imaginary pupil; preferably not a bright one!

Determine to Remember – We forget much because we do not determine to remember. We say, ‘I expect I shall remember’, or ‘I hope I remember’ or I’ll try to remember’. We fail to make a definite act of the will-‘I shall remember’. With such half-hearted resolves, is it any wonder we forget?

How to Get What You Want?

Success is getting What You are After

Getting what you want can be termed as success in life. It means the realization of your goal. In other words the attainment of the desired object is called success. Since success refers to accomplishing whatever one sets out to do, it will not mean same to you as it would to some one else. We all want different things in life. What is more important we have several wants and each one has his own priorities? The fact remains, you must get what you want and if you get what you want you will be successful.

Know What You Want

The first thing, then, is that you must know and be sure of your want. Next, when your wants are more than one, you must lay down your priorities. Thirdly, avoid contradictions, by which I mean one want of yours should not clash with another. It is better to have one aim at a time. It will help you to concentrate your efforts, energy and thoughts. Lastly, relate your aim to the resources you have and you can muster. No doubt you must aim high. But to reach the hill top, you have to start climbing from the base. Therefore, have your main aim and then set immediate objectives, so that you can advance steadily and slowly. As you progress you will find that you are able to take rapid strides and even extensive jumps.

What Makes One a Winner

The secret is that directly or indirectly other people have to help you to attain your goal. The greater their co-operation, the sooner and bigger your success. If you can not sell yourself to others, you can not attain your goal. Since you have to depend on other people for ultimate success what you have alone will not do. Success depends to a great extent on what you say and what you do with your ideas, talents or gifts. Invariably it is not what you know but what you do about what you know.

Sell Yourself Technique

It is no magic or trick to sell yourself to others, to make them take interest in you, to cause them to sit up, really notice you as well as what you have to offer for their business, home use, friendship, entertainment, fun or profit. No matter who you are and what your qualifications as well as accomplishments happen to be, your success in life will greatly depend on your ability to sell yourself to others.

Perennial Human Hunger and Thirst

Every human individual is always and ever thirsty and hungry for one thing. He wants to feel important. He craves to be recognized and appreciated genuinely and sincerely. He wants affection, warmth and friendship. He likes to be heard. He mellows when the other person displays a keen, sincere and genuine interest in him. This is a standing hunger and thirst on the part of one and all. It is no seasonal demand. People for ever-every hour of the day, every day of the week, every week of the month, every month of the year and every year of their lives-crave for importance, appreciation, recognition and fellowship. You will give them what they desire strongly. You will also get what you want.

Getting What You Want

To get what you want, then, think first in terms of what he wants. Talk in terms of his interest. Never try to force them nor ask for favors. Meet their thirst and hunger first and know their minds. Then arouse a desire for what you have to offer. Make them thirsty and hungry for your service, goods or for whatever that you wish to offer. Ideas ultimately rule and you can sell your ideas by enthusiasm, persistence, persuasion and above all, by proper motivation.

Enhancing your concentration

Building stronger and longer concentration periods

Building your concentration power is much like developing and strengthening the muscles of your body. However, you will be able to improve your concentration without working up a profuse sweat. It’s more a matter of cool, calm and conscientious practice.
The basic process in developing your concentration powers is to gradually take on more difficult mental tasks. These tasks should require more rigorous and more lengthy periods of concentration. As you progress, reward yourself for increases in your concentration span.
The first step is to prepare a list of concentration tasks which you normally confront in your work or at home. If you have difficulty recalling and recounting situations where your concentration is critical or necessary, carry a notebook with you for two weeks and note the situations requiring firm concentration.
For example, you may have had difficulty at work repeating the machine. Or, you might have difficulty following travel directions on a weekend trip. After you have collected your concentration items, rank them in order from the easiest to the most difficult.
Now that you have listed and ranked your items, start with the easiest one. Let’s say that it is proofreading a two-page letter to pick up any typographic mistakes. Gather together some practice material-old letters or current reports the need to be scrutinized. Set a concentration time target, say five minutes, and then get to the task. Don’t look up or break your concentration in any other way. When the time is up, check your performance. Were you able to hold your concentration to the task? Qualitatively, were you able to pick up any errors in the letters? When you can maintain effective concentration over three separate trials at a particular time span then move up to the next level. By working at each task, beginning with relatively short concentration periods and progressing to longer time spans, you will be able to increase your work concentration appreciably.
It is important to say that fatigue is a significant factor which affects concentration. Concentrating is generally hard work. Therefore, you will want to gauge your effective concentration periods to the type of work to be done and schedule adequate rest periods to offset fatigue.

Concentration practice exercise
• Take the series slowly so that you can mentally absorb each step.
• Repeat each step out loud to help fix the information in your memory.
• Ask questions to clarify any ambiguities or doubts.
• Try to establish a mental image of each step to link it with the proceeding and succeeding steps.
• At the end of the series, try to repeat the entire set of instructions.
• When carrying out the instructions, repeat the steps as you go to further fix the series in your memory, if retention is necessary.

Checklist to Make Daily Planning Work for You

• Prepare a personal daily planning sheet and make some photocopies. Have your pad of planning sheets ready for use each day.
• Establish the habit of planning your day as soon as you get to work. Getting your tasks down in writing is the most important task at the start of your workday.
• Be sure that your planned projects and time limits are realistic. Trying to conquer too large a task in too short time is only setting yourself up for failure-not a positively motivating experience!
• Reward yourself as you work through the tasks on your list, especially when you keep to the scheduled time.
• Build into your daily plans sufficient variety to keep you interested and motivated.
• Don’t forget to add daily exercise to release any tensions generated at work or at home.
• Periodically assess your planning. Can it be done more effectively? Discuss your planning approach with a colleague respected for high efficiency.
• Practice saying ‘No’ to others who unnecessarily intrude. ‘No’ is a difficult word to say, but with conscientious practice, you should be able to say ‘No’ firmly, but with tact and diplomacy.
• Plan ahead for special leisure events and use these activities as rewards for getting specified high priority jobs done.
• Plan for some time each day for creative thinking, developing ideas or solving work-related problems.
• Feel good about becoming more organized. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with becoming more time and task effective. Your boss will certainly agree!

Conversation and Addressing

Conversation and addressing groups are the two main forms of communicating with others. For both, you need a fair measure of self-confidence. If, naturally, you lack this, you will find it develop by practice.

• Recollect instances from your childhood which humiliated you, and then laugh them out of court.
• Accept yourself as a person of worth. Esteem yourself, value yourself. Rejoice in your own uniqueness. And because you are unique, remember that you can make a contribution to life which no one else can make.
• Constantly remind yourself that you have a great untapped potential of ability.
• Fill up any gaps in your general education.
• Improve the quality of your voice and speech.

It is an advantage in conversation to have thought through to your own convictions about all major issues. Some knowledge of history and the sciences, however superficial, is a help; also an acquaintance with current books, films, plays and events.
As much as possible, speak with feeling and enthusiasm. Avoid droning and hardly moving your lips as if you aspire to be a ventriloquist. So many speak in a deadpan voice which lacks feelings, life and interest. When you speak with confidence, zest and sparkle, your personality shines through, and you make more impact.
Remember to make an interest in words; the more you have at your disposal the better you will converse.
The ability to address groups of people is a most satisfying from of self-expression, seeing that it meets the basic need to be significant. Anyone of average intelligence may become an acceptable public speaker.
Naturally you must be audible, so train yourself to speak with clarity and vigour, stressing important words and making effective use of pauses. Given clear speech, a reasonable command of language, and ideas or a message you wish to impart, you will need to observe the following:

• Prepare Well – Preparation for public speaking may be direct or indirect. Under the latter comes wide reading, observation, deep thought and a general sense of awareness. Direct preparation involves getting a firm group of your subject, brooding over it, getting to know far more than you are going to use.
Next, gather all relevant material likely to be of interest to your audience. Place this under suitable headings, each of which should lead naturally to the next. When you have ample material, select only the best, bearing in mind the type of audience you are going to face.
At this stage, some speakers write out their speech in full. This is useful-to start with, at least-provided you do not allow your language to become stilted or bookish. And make no attempt to learn what you have written by heart. Instead, use it to make a summary on two or three postcards. Use these cards for rehearsing your speech. Do not worry about using the same words each time. Remember to take these cards with you and do not try to conceal them from your audience-they are no disgrace. Later, with more experience and confidence, you will be able to memorize your main points, and then you can dispense with notes.

• Your appearance and delivery – Be well groomed but not over-dressed. Err on the side of the conventional. If possible, begin with a smile or at least a pleasant expression. Your audience will not expect you to look dressed or worried.
Stand erect and appear relaxed and confident. For the most part stand still but an occasional shift in position is not distracting.
Beginners are often troubled about what to do with their hands. The best advice is to forget them. Get so gripped by what you are saying and with the desire to make an impact on your audience that your hands will take care of themselves. Until you get into that state, let your hands hang loosely by your sides, whence they will easily swing into natural gestures; though beware of an indefinite waving of the hands which means nothing. When you find yourself using a gesture, let it be a definite one.
If you are unable to rest your notes on a table, hold them in one hand so as to leave the other free for gestures.
Generally, direct your gaze just over the heads of those sitting in the middle, but occasionally take everyone into its orbit. Avoid looking at the floor, ceiling or windows.

• Platform nerves – Even experienced speakers get nervy just before speaking, so you must expect it. It will help you to keep controlled, however, if you keep yourself feeling friendly towards your audience. Remember it consists not of enemies, but good, kindly folk who have paid you a compliment by coming along to listen to you.
The feeling of friendliness will enhance your sincerity, and give your voice qualities which will help your listeners to like you in return. Bear this in mind then-while you are loving an audience you can not be scared of it.
Also keep relaxed and breathe deeply. Regard the tendency to be nervy as nature’s way of preparing you to be your best.

• Be vital – Call on your own experiences as much as possible. This will make enable you to be more graphic and to fill in colorful and precise details.
To gain and hold interest, make what you say in some way directly connected with the best interests of the audience. Your opening remarks, in particular, should be carefully chosen to ‘whet the appetite’.
Use concrete words rather than abstract.
What was said above that vocabulary applies especially to the public speaker. You must have a large stock of words upon which you may call promptly and confidently. The ready use of the right word leads to fluent, convincing, colorful speech.

• Be enthusiastic – Your attitude towards your subject will largely determine that of your audience. If you are placid or indifferent, your audience will be the same. Speak with fervor, feeling, enthusiasm, and you will quickly have your audience reflecting the same qualities. With enthusiasm, the most crude of speakers makes an impact on an audience; without it, the words of the most accomplished are largely ineffective.
