Commuting and Work-related Travel

Those workers who live in cities and commute to work by car, might find some of the following suggestions to be time savers.
Why not start by questioning the basic necessity of having your car sitting in a parking space during your work hours. Is public transport an option? Aside from the considerable financial saving in purchase and maintenance costs, you can use your commuting time more efficiently by taking public transport. Commuting time can then be used for work preparation, recreational reading, planning or just relaxing. If your job requires you to have a car in steady use or at least at call, some of the following pointers may be applicable.

Time Savers for Commuters

• Use a tape recorder to prepare notes while traveling or to listen to educational tapes.
• Upgrade your qualifications by doing a taped correspondence course while commuting. Carry a portable tape playback machine with you with an ear plug attachment so that you can also listen in public places.
• You can practice relaxation exercises at red traffic lights by using your hand brake and then letting your body relax in the driver’s seat.
• Bicycling or walking, if circumstances allow, can be convenient ways to combine traveling to work and getting routine daily exercise.
• If driving your car to work is a must, listen to the radio traffic reports so to avoid congested areas.
• A pre-paid parking space can save you hassles and time, and your time is probably more valuable than the parking fees.
