• Develop a Liking for Words – Besides being useful, many words are beautiful, both in sound and appearance. For example Jasper, sapphire, emerald, amethyst etc.
• Keep a Word-Book – Carry a notebook in which to record every word that is new to you, or which you have to admit you could not have used confidently. It is useful to write down the phrase or sentence in which it occurs. In a few months you will have listed all the words you are likely to meet or require. Once you become word-conscious, you will be surprised at your progress.
• Learn a Daily Stint – Decide what stint will be, say three to a dozen words. Transfer your stint to a larger book, writing the words down the left-hand side, and spacing them evenly. Now deal with each as follows. Consult a dictionary-Nut tall Standard is a good one-and check how the word is pronounced. Write the word several times, saying it aloud as you do so.
Concentrate on its meaning. Read the dictionary definition carefully. Then, if you wrote out the context in the first place, transfer this phrase or sentence to the larger book, deciding which meaning of the word was intended. Generally the first one or two meanings are the most common and important. Write these in your book, abbreviating or simplifying as necessary. Finally, frame the word in a short sentence of your own, and say this aloud several times as you write it.
Deal with each word of your stint in this way. You’ll do three words in ten minutes or less, and you will really master them. Have a quick revision every week and month. In a year you will have increased your vocabulary appreciably.
• Read Widely – Words are truly significant only in relation to other words. Reading not only introduces you to new words but shows you how to use them. It also keeps you familiar with those already met, and demonstrates how they have further meanings and uses. Authors differ in the extent of their vocabularies and each subject has its own specialized vocabulary. The more authors and subjects you read, the bigger your stockpile of words.
• Study Groups of Words – Concentrate upon groups of words related to a particular subject or group of subjects, e.g. the sciences.
Another method is to take a prefix and consult a dictionary for its cognates, e.g. uni, ani, poly,bene etc.
